Design Inspiration: Glide
It’s time for another behind-the-scenes look into our inspiration at Hager-vor again! This month, we’ll be looking at the Glide tee — an all-new design for us and our current tee of the month. As always, Cornwall and the nature around us have heavily influenced the design.
The design features three identical lines inside a wheel of text. For us, we thought the lines represented numerous things. The first, and most obvious, would be waves. As surfers, it’s difficult to ignore all the waves right on our doorstep. The feeling you get surfing is akin to gliding — it’s almost frictionless. We love how surfing is the same around the world — you show anyone a board and a wave and they’ll know. Even if they don’t surf. They’ll know. For us, the lines in the Glide tee mirror this. There’s a sense of familiarity in such a frequently seen symbol that people will just get it. Whatever it is.
The second design inspiration is from wind patterns. The general representation of wind patterns is similar to our design — usually numerous lines alongside each other depending on the strength of the wind. When we think of this, our minds immediately picture sea birds bobbing in the sky. In fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking they were hanging on a string. Then, without warning, they just glide off without any real effort. Again, we think the act of gliding is natural and effortless.
The final inspiration comes from our general love of design. When we design new products, we still sit down with a pen and paper and keep it as natural and organic as we can. That feeling of pen across paper has never been replicated for us. There’s a sense of connection, of personality.
The colours were the final part of the puzzle. The two shades of blue were chosen to represent the variation of sea colours around Cornwall. On any given day, depending on the light, the sea will be different shades of blue. When it’s sunny and there are no clouds in the sky, the sea becomes a brilliant turquoise. There’s a perceived clarity that allows you to almost see whatever is beneath you as you sit out on your board. But on a more overcast day, the blue sea deepens towards the colour you see printed on the white tee. Even on days like this, it’s difficult to find fault in the sea.
